Cloud Kurta

in handspun khadi cotton

₹ 2,800

Free shipping anywhere in India  ·  ₹ 800 international, tracked

A loose, knee-length kurta in the softest khadi we have ever held. The fabric was spun by hand in a small weaving cluster in Ponduru, Andhra Pradesh — a place where cotton has been hand-spun for two centuries. We call it "cloud" because that is genuinely what it feels like. You will understand on the first wear.

About the cloth

Handspun khadi cotton, mid-weight (140 GSM). Undyed, unbleached — what the cotton looks like before we colour it. The colour you see is the cotton's own.

The fabric will have small slubs and minor variations across the length. These are the fingerprints of hand-spinning and hand-weaving. They are not faults. We would not buy fabric that did not have them.

How it was made

Sri Ramana weaving at a pit loom in Ponduru
  • Cotton spun on a wheel in Ponduru, Andhra Pradesh
  • Woven on a pit loom by Sri Ramana, a fourth-generation weaver
  • Cut and stitched in our Mumbai studio by Faroukbhai, who has tailored for us since the beginning
  • Buttons in coconut shell, sourced from a small workshop in Kerala

Total time from cotton to kurta: roughly six weeks.

Fit notes

Cut loose and long. The kurta sits about an inch below the knee on a person of average height. We do not believe in tight fits, and we do not size garments to be slim. The cut is generous — it honours the body.

If you are between sizes, take the smaller one. The fabric will give.

Care

  • First wash: cold water, by hand, gentle.
  • After that: machine wash cold, gentle cycle, hung to dry in shade.
  • Iron warm if you like a crisp finish. Skip ironing if you like the lived-in look — we do.
  • The fabric will soften noticeably after three or four washes. This is the point.
  • A button comes loose or a seam needs mending — anytime, ever — send it back. We fix it free.

Things to know before you buy

  • Khadi wrinkles. It will wrinkle when you sit. We think this looks beautiful. If you want a non-wrinkling shirt, this is not the kurta for you.
  • The shade may vary very slightly from the photograph. Natural cotton dye lots are never identical, and we will not pretend they are.
  • This is made to order. Your kurta will ship in 18–22 days from when you place the order. We will email you when it begins, and again when it ships.
